You Me at Six: Digipak analysis

The front of the digipak is plain, showing the words 'you me at six, sinners never sleep'. The cover matches the title of the album, showing a women holding a ID board. The person holding the ID board's face is not show, suggesting the band are more about the music then their. The theme of black and white runs throughout the digipak. The typography is white so it stands out.

The album comes with a DVD that is all about the band; who they are, how they got together and where they are today. This could be seen as a treat for the audience for buying the album. There is also individual pictures of the band, posing as if they were lining up to get there mugshot done in prison, still in the theme of the album but also seen as a treat.

The inside image shows a blacked out image of the band, showing only their figure. This relates back to our idea as we wanted to have a sundown, and only showing our figures, reiterating the point that the band are souly focused on their music and performance.

The fact that the album is based on prison could suggest the band are rebellious and that they don't obey the law. The colour scheme portrays the band as having lack of emotion and creates a grainy effect, like they live like rockstars.

The back of the digipack shows the same typography as the front, suggesting a houses theme between the two. The back offer usual codes and conventions of a normal back cover.

The picture on the outer part of the digipak shows their faces and represents them as being very serious meaning that they mean business and aren't messing around. In the photo the band are looking towards the camera which looks like they are interacting with the audience and makes them feel like the album is aimed toward them. The image is taken with very high contrast and uses low key light light this creates shadows and emphasis' the black and white.

The three interior panes of the digipak are covered by one photo. The criminal theme is continued, the image look as if it is a police desk covered in police information and evidence. The fingerprints shown in the inner part of the digipak would appeal to the fans as they are personal and would make the fans feel closer to the band.

Inside the digipak is a lyric book which is  conventional for this genre (Punk/rock). The photo is taken from a low angle suggesting they are inferior. The lyrics themselves are set out normally, just the text written again in white, nothing to make it more interesting.

Mood boards.

Today we made a mood board for our band. This represents our artist and what they are as a band, the images give suggestion of the type of genre of the band and what sort of personality they have.
We wanted to show off an indie rock vibe so we put in pictures of guitars, flower crowns, and Lana del Rey. We are hoping this vibe will come across to our audience.

Finalised song

"Suddenly I See" is a song by Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall and is featured on her debut album, Eye to the Telescope. It was released on 29 August 2005 as the third single from the album, charting at number 12 in the UK Singles Chart.

We chose to do 'KT Tunstall - Suddenly I See'. The song is sung by a female artist and her music is usually seen as indie/rock/folk. This perfectly meets brief. Although the artist is a solo artist, and our group is a band we feel like we can make it work.

The song uses a guitar in it, so we can still do our idea of the clos ups of the insturments, a usual convention found in indie/rock music videos.

17th September

Today we showed out idea to the class to see what they thought of it. We got feedback that our idea is good but we need some work on it and that we need to finalise our song soon so we can start story boarding as soon as possible.

At the moment we are finding it hard to come up with an idea of a song that matches our genre. We like songs like you and me by the wannadies and there she goes by the la's. However these are male bands and our group is a female band so we can not do this idea.

Ideas for music video/ group.

Ideas on album:
- Back of album, black outline of the girls, sunshine in top right corner. Showing that the girls are completely for the music and not basing their career on their looks.

Music video:
- Close up of girls (possibly playing musical instruments, close up of instruments)
- Fast shots to fit in with the upbeat music
- Shots of the band playing at festivals

Clothing
- Typical indie look
- Long, coloured hair
- Skinny jeans, band t-shirts

16th September

We researched bands that matched our genre so that it gave us an idea of what our band would look like. We then made this into a PowerPoint. Haim was a relatable bans for us as they are a all girl group that plays indie music, we also found that they seem really natural, wearing minimal makeup and their hair is long. This will help us with our look for our group.

We also looked into Lana Del Rey. Although she is a solo artist, her look and music is similar to our ideas. Again in her albums she is presented outside wearing minimal makeup.

Kings of Leon are a male indie/ rock group that we may take inspiration from. It is clear from their album artwork that they care more about their music than their appearance. The back of one of their albums has a similar idea to ours, showing the outline of the boys with a camp fire as the only light coming in.

12th September

Today we revived some briefs from Leanne to give us some ideas for our music video. Unfortunately these briefs didn't appeal to us as they didn't have the look we was going for. We decided on a genre of indie/ rock. We then started to look into artist that fitted into this genre. Our ideas are as follows
- The la's, there she goes
- The wannadies, you and me
- Dodgy, staying out for the summer
- Blur, song 2
- Groove armada, I see you baby
- Wheatus, teenage dirtbag
- Wham, wake me up before you go go
- Kartina and the waves, walking on sunshine
